The Ashcroft Breeding Program

In 1999, I started my research into Bedlington Terriers. Having decided I wanted to get involved, now I had to locate my foundation stock. I had been "in" pure-bred dogs since 1982, and realized that I am very picky about the quality of my dogs. I wanted to start with the best, and develop a plan to breed outstanding dogs.

At Chelsea Blue Kennels, I found an imported male Ch. Isotop's Storm Warning, who had an outstanding coat, was small, typey and had a great temperament. I arranged to purchase a dog from his first litter, planned with the 1998 Pedigree Award Winner, Ch. Chelsea's Blue Cameo, a nice dog in her own right. This dog, my first Bedlington, became Ch. Jewelbox Diamond Jim CGC. Brady finished his championship by the time he was 9 months old, and was ranked in the top 20 in the breed the first year he was shown. He inherited his father's outstanding temperament, small size, lovely breed type and fantastic correct coat with lovely color and excellent texture.

At the Louisville KY Floating specialty, I fell in love with a bitch whose sound movement just blew me away. She won three 5 point majors in fours days, and in one weekend was Ch. Wrightwyn's Told You So. Samantha went on to win multiple owner-handled all-breed Best In Shows, a National Specialty BOS, BOB at Westminster and BOB at the first AKC Eukanuba "Classic" or Invitational. With her owner's help, I contacted Samantha's breeder, Brent Wright, to get my second Bedlington from him. Brent was not planning a litter at the time, but after seeing video of Samantha, he relented, and repeated the breeding that had produced her. This combination of Can/Am Ch. Touchwood Myra of Wrightwyn with Can/Am Ch. Dejeune Out of Texas really clicked. From the first litter, it produced three 1-1 champion bitches, from the second litter, my 1-1 bitch Cocoa finished her AKC championship by the time she was 10 months old, becoming Ch. Wrightwyn's Puttin On The Ritz. I have based my breeding program on the strong foundation of these bitches, the four sisters.

and Ch Ashcroft Sangeo Sierra.

This aunt to nephew breeding combines the two sisters, Samantha and Cocoa in one pedigree. It produced two "types" one shorter bodied and compact, the other longer bodied with more angulation. I hope to capitalize on these different types going forward. Click on their names to see their pedigree.

Ch Wrightwyn's Only You     x      Ch Jewelbox Diamond Jim CGC

                               produced

                Ch Destiny Ashcroft Rocks On

Roxy's dam "Peanut" is the most refined of the four sisters, with a body that is almost square. She has a very pretty head and less angulation than her siblings. Her daughter Roxy is refined, with an especially nice head and a lovely temperament. She inherited her mother's "type" to a strong degree.

Brent Wright in Richmond, BC, Canada did this breeding:

Ch Wrightwyn's Kick It Up A Notch                         Wrightwyn's Maria Alia

Ch Destiny Ashcroft Rocks On     x     BIS, BISS Ch Sangeo FarScape CD,AX,AXJ,NF,CGC,RA,TDI

produced our third litter at Ashcroft, born July 10, 2005

This pedigree brings two different sisters together, Samantha and Peanut, adding the lovely coat and temperament from Brady - Ch Jewelbox Diamond Jim CGC - through Roxy. Pictured above are CH Ashcroft Tug At Your Hart and CH Ashcroft Hart To Heart who both finished in the Spring of 2007. CH Ashcroft Hart of A Lady finished in May 2007.

Ch Ashcroft Sangeo Sonoma     x     Ch Sandon N'Oakhill Cheyna's Cheylo

produced our fourth litter at Ashcroft born July 26, 2005

Penny (AKC pointed)                 Elvira

This breeding takes the tightly linebred Sunny out to another linebred dog with a different genetic makeup, similar conformation and some strengths I want to incorporate into the Ashcroft dogs. Cheylo carries the long, lean head, and deep, flat ribbed chest that is a trademark of the Sandon N'Oakhill dogs. He is heavily linebred on the lovely Ch Sandon N'Oakhill Cheyna Star. Ashcroft Lucky American Dream (Elvira) resides in Sweden, Ashcroft Lucky Penny is here at Ashcroft and is AKC pointed.

Ch Wrightwyn's Puttin On The Ritz CGC     x    MBIS/MBISS Ch Sangeo FarScape CD,AX,AXJ,NF,RA,CGC,TDI

I repeated the first breeding done at Ashcroft, five pups were born April 17, 2006. Brent Wright in Richmond, BC, Canada also bred his Can Ch Wrightwyn's Maybe I Know, a full older sister to Ch Wrightwyn's Puttin On The Ritz to BIS/BISS Ch Sangeo FarScape AX,AXJ,RN,CD to produce another litter with the same pedigree.

AKC major-pointed Ashcroft Ain't Miss Behavin' (Mimi), Ch Ashcroft Gents Prefer Blondes (Gus, major pointed) finished in 2007.

Ch Ashcroft Jersey Boy (Fudge) finished quickly with four major wins to his credit in May 2007.

Ch Ashcroft Sangeo Sonora x Ch Boardwalk Ticket To The Moon

Nora has been bred back to her dam's "roots" by breeding her with Ch Boardwalk Ticket To The Moon. Ticket is the longer bodied type, Nora is more compact. He and Nora share fantastic rears and coat, and many other outstanding characteristics. This produced some gorgeous pups with superb coat and rears, nice heads, and lovely temperaments. Ch Ashcroft Magic Me At Lambs End (Timmy) finished in two long weekends!! CH Ashcroft Do U Believe In Magic earned her championship in 2007 as well, ending the year with a Terrier Group IV. Another brother, Ashcroft Hocus Pocus has potential as a canine model for professional photographer Barbara Augello. And brother Ashcroft Magical Jackson has sired a litter for us here at Ashcroft. His son Ashcroft Orion will be out in 2008.

               Magic                     Jackson                            Timmy                            EtCet

    Roxy               Ticket

The next Hart litter was Ch Boardwalk Ticket To The Moon x Ch Destiny Ashcroft Rocks On, born April 23, 2007. Roxy produced small, refined pups with lovely heads and wonderful bodies in her first litter. Ticket appears to be prepotent for coats, heads and fantastic rears. I'm hoping Roxy's refinement and Ticket's coat along with wonderful heads on both will produce pups as nice as the "magic" litter. These pups are the "English China" litter. Ashcroft Wedgewood Summer Sky is out and major pointed and Ashcroft Rogers Tivoli will be out in the ring when he matures a little.

In the fall of 2007 I brought my outcross results back together, breeding Ashcroft Magical Jackson to Ashcroft Lucky Penny. This line breeding brings litter sisters Ch Ashcroft Sangeo Sonora and Ch Ashcroft Sangeo Sonoma together with the genetic diversity provided by outcross sires from Boardwalk and Sandon n'Oakhill. Truly a test to see if line breeding on my females will achieve the desired results. Look for Ashcroft Orion out in the ring in 2008.

I hope to breed Ch Ashcroft Do U Believe In Magic to Ch Ashcroft Santana in late 2008 or in 2009. This niece to uncle breeding could produce some really outstanding results.

Future planned breedings for the youngsters include taking Callie and/or Sky to Ch Ashcroft Jersey Boy - again bringing outcrossed kids back into the primary line I'm breeding from.

Plans for Nora's second litter are up in the air - whether to repeat the breeding to Ticket, which had such outstanding results, or go out to another bloodline completely... always a hard decision.
